World leaders need will to bring peace to Iraq, says papal nuncio

In order to end the bloodshed in Iraq, world leaders need “first of all, the political will,” the apostolic nuncio in that country told the Catholic News Agency.

“If the international community—if they really want to make peace, to promote peace—they can engage more intensively,” said Archbishop Alberto Ortega.

He said that diplomats must be guided not by their countries’ national interests, but by the needs of the suffering people in Iraq.

“There are concrete people with a face and a family,” he reminded them.
