Diocese set to name new child protection chief

THE Dublin diocese will soon appoint a new director with the sole purpose of safeguarding children.

The post became vacant after the previous child protection director, Phil Garland, joined the HSE as its assistant national director for children and families.

A spokeswoman for the diocese said its search for a new director is not as a result of the damning Murphy report, which was published last month.

All complaints of child abuse received within the diocese are referred to the office, which then refers the case to the gardai and the HSE.
